Florida Keys Overview & History
The Florida Keys area of our state is not generally known for large expanses of sandy shoreline encountered along many popular Florida destinations. The keys have also not been referred to by a Florida “Coast” name. Despite these notable shortcomings, the Florida Keys offer some exceptional recreational opportunities for those seeking nature in the coastal areas of Florida. For this reason, this section of the Florida Nature Guide focuses on the undeveloped and unspoiled areas available in this unique “Old Florida” destination.
While visiting this area, one often finds that the greatest adventures are to be found on the many dotted islands which comprise the majority of the shoreline and are easily reached by boat. Renting this transportation for a day or two is always an option for the nature enthusiast to consider.
