Located four miles north of Fort Pierce Inlet State Park, Avalon State Park is conveniently accessed directly off Highway A1A. This relatively small by state park standards beachside park offers approximately one mile of comfortable firm sand along with beautiful views of the area’s Florida coastline and provides a great opportunity to those seeking low key oceanfront recreation.

Those seeking naturalist adventures will find that the coastal hammock which is located on the west side of A1A, provides abundant wildlife viewing opportunities and is home to several protected species including the gopher tortoise. The area is closed to vehicles to protect the ecosystem, but is open to foot travel and provides an excellent place for bird watching. Many unique wading birds, including the roseate spoonbill, American oystercatcher, brown pelican and little blue heron are frequently observed along the mangrove waterways. Along the trails and paths, visitors will see many of the native local flora including the Gumbo Limbo, Red Bay, Live Oak, Mangrove and diverse wildflowers common to this coastal area.

Other popular activities in this Treasure Coast destination include fishing, snorkeling and kayaking in the relatively warm clear waters. Several off shore underwater obstacles remain in the area and while these offer a habitat for marine life, can also present danger for careless swimmers. Various species of fish including Bluefish, Snook, Red/Black Drums, Pompano, Permit and Whiting are common as they migrate along the coast or travel towards the inlet in search of bait fish.

The park offers the basic amenities expected at a State Park, such as restrooms, picnic pavilions, grills and shower facilities to rinse off after a day at the beach. There are no lifeguards at this park and no concessions, so visitors will need to bring food and drink for the day’s activities.
